ARTIST PROFILE
Jorum Chiyangwa.
Zimbabwean stone sculptor
Jorum Chiyangwa is a Zimbabwean stone sculptor whose work draws inspiration from everyday life, human relationships, and emotion.
Born in 1983 in the Chivhu area of Zimbabwe, Jorum attended Chapwanya School before moving to Harare in 2002 in search of work. Later that year, he joined sculptor Arthur Fata at Chapungu Sculpture Park, working as his assistant and learning stone-carving techniques through direct experience.
This period helped establish the foundation of his practice. Over time, Jorum developed an approach characterised by simplified forms, graceful lines, and expressive human figures. His sculptures explore connection, contemplation, and movement, inviting viewers to recognise familiar feelings within the shape of stone.
His work has been exhibited in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, and Australia.
For Jorum, ordinary gestures and relationships provide starting points for artistic exploration. His imagination and response to the material guide the development of each sculpture. His ambition is to develop a distinctive body of work and establish his voice within Zimbabwe’s stone sculpture tradition.
